They are just a show stopper when the weather cooperates, in spite of the fact that this has been a crazy spring in the Washington D.C Metropolitan Area. A good example of how unexpected climate affects blooming plants is the well-known Cherry Blossoms. This year these famous trees were struggling to put out their regular show, thanks to freezing cold and rain. However, back to our Azaleas. There is a rainbow of colors available. You just need to drive by any neighborhood to enjoy these beauties. The big problem is, they don’t last long and if you don’t hurry, perhaps by next week, the bushes will be all green. Plant Stats: Perennial: Yes Hardiness: Evergreen Deer Resistant: Unfortunately, deer love to eat them. Full Sun: Prefer shaded areas instead of full sun. Partial Sun: Love partial sun Shade: Yes, mostly under tree shade Bloom Time: Spring, unfortunately just for few weeks. Color: White, pink, lavender, red, orange, and more. Size: Is a bush and must be trimmed right after it flowers. Water Needs: Very forgiving, I don’t recall watering mine regularly. Good Companion Plants: Any low/shorter size plants such as hostas or flowering annuals.

This is when the WOW factor hits you. Is total beauty when the sky, water and white sand meets to create natural art, no color pallet or paint brushes needed. No psychiatry therapy needed either when you frequent these places. Let’s visualize the scenario; you arrive, find that perfect spot, open your folding chair, umbrella, sit, pour a glass of wine, take a deep breath, then, a sense of relaxation and peace that simply overcomes you with total joy and happiness. Let’s not forget that breeze; just pack with pure air, and if you are lucky enough, you may see a playful dolphin or who knows, perhaps a mermaid. So friends, get in your cars and drive to your nearest beach to enjoy mother nature. Nothing is more soothing than looking at the tranquil water of a lake. Take a look at the colors that God used to create these amazingly beautiful bodies of water in my slide show. The best part, they are all free and you can walk or drive to one and enjoy it all day long. So, don’t take nature for granted, just plan a trip this weekend to go to your nearest lake/pond or even beach and enjoy their peaceful display of beauty. Who knows? With some luck, you may get to see an alligator, a dolphin, a manatee, a sea turtle or even herons or black bellied ducks. |
