GARDENING HACK: REVAMPING MY OLD GARDEN BENCH FOR 2021

We all have garden furniture that needs to be revamped instead of trashing them. Case in point, my old garden iron bench that I painted in orange few years ago and since, it has deteriorated. Furthermore, I already gotten sick and tired of my orange decorations in the back yard from last year.

Hence, what I needed to do was to think about a new color, get a bit of elbow grease work and make it look like new and refresh again. While I worked on my bench, I also did a couple of other decorating items and a side table.

I only needed a good power wash, sanding it a bit and a couple of spray paint cans. The rest is history, just found a spot to do the painting, got gloves and mask and did my magic. So now I feel more comfortable with my new back yard décor colors. Yippee!

What are you waiting for? Take a stroll out and assess what you may want to revamp and change for this year. It doesn’t come easier than that. Furthermore, it is so economical, just purchase the spray paint and BOOM, your magic will make you happy this summer season.

GARDENING HACK: EXPERIMENTING!!!

When we cook at home we ended up with an abundance of scraps that have the potential to become veggies and herbs. What I do is to mix them with other store purchased herbs that I don’t want to grow from seeds and then wait for the results.

So, I decided on my 2021 scraps experimenting and cut bottoms of veggies, place them in water and pray for roots to develop. My selection this year included:

Celery
Beets
Green onions
Basil and
Cuban oregano
Rosemary
Then I purchase Lemon Thyme and added it to the container.

OUTCOME/RESULTS:
Celery (FAIL)
Beets (FAIL)
Green onions (SUCCESS)
Basil (FAIL)
Cuban oregano (SUCCESS)
Rosemary (SUCCESS)

Never be afraid to fail, since there will always be a lesson to learn to improve next time. Therefore, get your veggies scraps, put them in water and change the water regularly until they develop roots. Finally, plant them in good soil.

MY GARDENING HACK SERIES FOR SPRING 2021! DIVIDE YOUR PERENNIALS NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE IT YET!

DIVIDE PERENNIALS: Early and mid-spring is a good time to divide most perennials, depending in the zone you live. You will know is time to divide when you get to see that your plant is growing; however, is dead or empty in the center.

A good rule of thumb is to divide perennials after they flower, therefore, you can divide the fall bloomers now, in  spring.

Do not divide the peonies or irises now, just wait until fall and do it then.

Google the name of the plants that are showing the empty centers in your garden and get the information on how to divide them and exactly when.

Once you divide your perennials, make sure that you share some of the divided excess with family, neighbors and friends. Don't forget to use some of them to plant elsewhere in your garden.
