Well, it’s a tough economy and for a lot of people, every little bit helps to stay afloat. Each year I give it a shot to start plants from pieces of vegetables and fruits. This year, so far the Romaine lettuce is showing that I may have some organic Romaine at home real soon, smile. We’ll see, smile.
First, purchase your Romaine lettuce, take it home. Cut few inches from the bottom, rinse the lettuce, spin dry and place in a Zip log bag with some paper towels to absorb any moisture that will spoil it sooner that you want.
Now, take the bottoms that you cut off from the leaves and place them in a container with water to cover just the stem base.
Wait for about a week or so and you will see the baby lettuce leaves starting to emerge. Wait until they are about an inch or two tall and developed some roots. Then remove them from the water to transplant in rich soil. (This method is more effective, so wait for the roots)
At this point you can place them in a window to get some morning sun or wait until they are stronger and place the container outside.
Now is a matter of waiting until they grow enough to cut the leaves and make your ORGANIC Romaine lettuce salad. Boom!
