Well, it’s a tough economy and for a lot of people, every little bit helps to stay afloat. Each year I give it a shot to start plants from pieces of vegetables and fruits. This year, so far the Romaine lettuce is showing that I may have some organic Romaine at home real soon, smile. We’ll see, smile.
First, purchase your Romaine lettuce, take it home. Cut few inches from the bottom, rinse the lettuce, spin dry and place in a Zip log bag with some paper towels to absorb any moisture that will spoil it sooner that you want. Now, take the bottoms that you cut off from the leaves and place them in a container with water to cover just the stem base. Wait for about a week or so and you will see the baby lettuce leaves starting to emerge. Wait until they are about an inch or two tall and developed some roots. Then remove them from the water to transplant in rich soil. (This method is more effective, so wait for the roots) At this point you can place them in a window to get some morning sun or wait until they are stronger and place the container outside. Now is a matter of waiting until they grow enough to cut the leaves and make your ORGANIC Romaine lettuce salad. Boom!

Regardless of what you decide to do, either to purchase a planter already done or to fill your planters with beautiful flowers, it is always a win-win situation because you will be displaying flowers and plants for everyone to enjoy!
Keep on doing it, you will never disappoint. It actually happens every year. We have the empty planters from the year before, most or all the plant material was killed by the brutal winter, then what a dilemma pop’s. Do I go to the garden center to purchase (an expensive one)? Or should I get my creative juices to design a pot with various color plants combinations and sizes?
Well, as you know, the best part is to create what you really want. If you do, just go to any garden center or Home Depot or Walmart or you name it, Costco or whatever, and purchase what you like and put your planters together. Boom! The is one basket for everyone’s taste. You can see the colors, varieties of plant material and abundance. Yippee!!!!!
I removed the Winter Decorations in my garden window months ago. I was sick of winter. Spring came by and I was too busy to come up with something. Therefore, suddenly I realize that I needed to come up with some fresh décor for my window, since it is what I look when I am doing the dishes, smile! Then, I’ll think about making arrangements with my summer flowers.
As thrifty as I am, (and I learned it from the master, Margie Freeman), I decided to look at my china cabinet and found the color I wanted, white. Then, I looked into my craft room and found this Owl flower vase, added some garden herbs and Boom. What a simple decoration, a tea time decor for my window, in no time and cost me no money. For now, I added my cooking herbs to the vase; however, the summer flowers are about to bloom and they will find a home inside my cute Owl! The neighbors did it again. During my daily walks I continue to be entertained by the fantastic gardening taste of my neighbors. Keep it going, I will never get tired of it!
It’s no brainer, every year the task of purchasing mulch and spread it thorough your gardens is inevitable. I am lucky enough that I have never done it myself and that my hubby takes upon that challenge every year and do it beautifully. (Thank you Jesus!)
Last weekend, he purchased 20 bags, it’s usually more than that, but I am designating an area for planters and vegetables and I do not want mulch there. Well, it took him almost the whole Saturday to go to the store, load the bags in the truck, bring them home, mow the lawn first and then start working on the mulch task. (Wow, I am exhausted already.) Yep, he is a keeper? Smile. We are in the month of May. Several plants are in bloom now and others are awakening. However, the blooming Azaleas, continue to make a splash all over. It is simply amazing the variety of colors that they offer. They are starting to fade away so hurry and enjoy them while you can.
One thing though, As I walked through several neighborhoods, I could not find a lavender color Azalea. Then on my second search day, I finally capture one. Interesting, maybe it is not a popular color for gardeners or the color is nor openly available at garden centers. Either way, let’s just enjoy what I was able to capture with my camera. Shallots are really onions cousins, smile. They are very much related. However, shallots are a bit sweeter than onions and are great to use when you just need a mild onion flavor.
When we plant one shallot, we will eventually get a cluster of shallots that looks more like garlic clusters. The difference from a shallot and an onion is that when you plant one onion, that is exactly what you will harvest, one onion. So, get those hands dirty now, start them indoors like I did. I found out that one of my shallots already sprouted, therefore, I took advantage and put the roots in a bit of water to allow for more rooting before I plant it outside. Finally, I want to thank my beautiful son, who started me on using shallots, which a couple of years ago I never used. Gracias my love! |
